Background:

Mangkang Environment Project is located in Mangkang Wetan Village, Tugu Municipality, Semarang City, Central Java Indonesia. The project is answering the needs of preserving the coastal side of North Java Sea in Mangkang. This area is now in danger due to the abrasion of the sea, cutting mangrove by local factory and heavy force from the river flows. Garbage problem was re-raised in the recent years. Lack of locals’ awareness about environmental friendly lifestyle destroys the nature slowly. They also face problem in integrated garbage management system, moreover there is no daily truck garbage picker in this area. Local community initiated to make recycle stuff from garbage to decrease the garbage impact to the nature.

Aims:

  • To initiate the project of protecting the sea shore by planting mangroves, and also learning about the other usefulness of mangrove,

  • To raising awareness of the local people, the fisherman, and local students to protect their environment as well as their future.

  • To Empower local people to be more aware on eco-friendly lifestyle & health

 

Work:

Planting mangrove and other trees in beach, environment education garbage management discussion to local people and local children, physical activity to support garbage management program, school visits for environment education, green campaign.

 

Special Remarks:

Very hot and less hygiene condition of poor coastal area. Be ready with sun block and sun burnt. Bring some ideas for environment education (especially about mangrove and how to take care of it).

Street Children Music Camp

Background:

Music Camp - Vulnerable Children collaborated with Rumah Pintar Bangjo, sister program in PKBI Central Java, our mother organization. This place is very close with Johar Market, the biggest traditional market in Semarang. Most of the local people there live in low economic standard. The housing areas are dirty and flooded by seawater in daily basis even though it is not regularly. The children mostly lived in stall inside Johar Market which make them has no official address of house. This condition make children use the market as their playground, while their parents serve the customer. Usually they also try to beg for money to the people that come to Johar Market. Main focus of Rumah Pintar Bangjo is give space for children to have another activity, such as reading books, handicraft, etc. Since 2014, IIWC of PKBI organized a special camp, called Music Camp, to teach children playing music and dig deeper their potential on art.

 

Project:

  • Studying with kids, in shelter with art theme

  • Community visit, to promote shelter and recruit local volunteer

  • Mini concert for kids, to appreciate children’s talent in music

 

Aims:

  • To organize activities for the children in Johar Market area

  • To exchange culture between participants and local people

  • To empower local people to be more aware on education for kids, especially on art

 

Work:

Create fun learning atmosphere with full of art activity especially music, promoting spirit of volunteerism to local people, held a mini concert to appreciate kid’s talent.

 

Special Remarks:

This workcamp will take place in slum area, so be ready with sun burnt. We expect you to teach kids about music, either by traditional instrument from your country or international music instrument.

Background:

Tegalrejo Red-District area is prostitution area in Semarang Regency; there are living more than 100 families who mostly work as sex workers or food sellers. We run this project since 2006, together with our mother organization PKBI. This work camp focus on improving quality life of marginalized kids so they will threaten fairly and less discriminated. Most of the children living in this area don’t have birth certificate, since their parent don’t have identity card either. On the other hand, they couldn’t afford higher level of school, and must faces high-risk-sexual activity scene (such as violence, sex bargaining, or sexual exploitation) as their playing ground. By this situation we worked with local stakeholder to provide a shelter called “Rumah Belajar” or “Study Center” where children can read books, make handicraft, fun studying, and cross cultural understanding with volunteer.

 

Project:

  • Non-formal education for kids, by have fun class about self-hygiene

  • Character building education; educate kids to have good attitude

  • Raising local involvement in education; open discussion, public campaign trough community visit, cultural exchange

 

Aims:

  • To organize activities for kids in Tegalrejo Red-District area

  • To exchange culture between participants and local people

  • To empower local people to be more aware on education for kids

 

Work:

  • Create fun atmosphere for kids to studying self-hygiene, good attitude by storytelling, games, drawing, etc.

  • School campaign to minimize kids-discrimination, or other local issue. Volunteer also will help kids learn English, and world culture.

 

Special Remarks:

This work camp will be held in red-district area, where lot of sexual transaction among sexual worker is happen every day. Be open minded, leave prejudice behind, and bring lot of love for kids.

Background:

GAMeS (Gerakan Ayo Menanam Sayur) ENG: Vegetable Planting Movement. Initiated a movement to optimize the usage of household waste and rising awareness toward society on environment protection in Semarang City. They face some problem o spread this spirit. For example lack of awareness on how important farming habit in urban live, and city live makes not so much time want to invest on participating the movement. But, for some couple years GAMeS engage cooperation with family empowerment program that most of the members are housewife in certain group. This group has the most possibility to join the movement.

 

Project:

Increase participation of urban communities to participate actively on farming movement to greening the city and farming in limited area.

 

Aims:

  • To increase of urban communities participation on Urban Farming Movement

  • To realize Vegetables Community which we are going to propose to city governor as one sample to be implemented to other areas.

  • To increase interest from urban communities on greening program of Semarang city and communities urban garbage management.

Work:

Farming activities with urban communities, verticultur tools making in games activity center, life-in with local communities, edu-farming program in some schools.

 

Special Remarks

Be ready with sun, due to the activity mostly happen outdoor.

Background:

Gedongsongo is one of national heritage located in Central Java. There are 5 temples in the areas and the temples and became an attractive place for holiday, especially for regional tourist. This temple also surrounded by many intangible heritage such as traditional dances, traditional music, and festival. However, some aspects still need to be improved, such as; the environment awareness, socio economic background, sanitation and hygiene of the local people. Most of the locals are earning money from the vegetables garden. The increasing number of visitors each year not only contributed in littering, but also vandalism on the temple, as it become one of the big problem on the heritage preservation issues.

 

Project:

Volunteers will do the follow up of activities; education and sharing knowledge on garbage recycle (school visit), managing garbage dumping, cleaning temple, environmental education for children, and campaign about environmental issue.

 

Aims:

To increase the awareness of the local people about garbage problem (especially non organic garbage), to support tangible and intangible heritage preservation program, cultural exchange with local people and educate student/local people to take care their environment.

 

Work:

Mainly will work in changing behavior activities of the local people toward their environment such as recycle garbage, introducing personal hygiene related to the environment condition, organizing additional English lesson and school visit, and playing games with children. There will be also possibilities on physical work such as cleaning the temple, planting trees, gardening, or making sign board/garbage bin.

 

Special Remarks:

Please bring sun block, rain coat and warm clothes to prevent very hot in the day time, rain during work and very cold at night. Bring any necessary information about garbage recycle.

 

Accommodation:

You will live with a host family with shared toilet and bathroom, sleeping bag and mattress needed, and self-cooking.

Background:

Pemalang is one of regency on north coast of Central Java province in Indonesia. The northern part of the regency is lowland, while the southern part is highland, with the peak of Mount Slamet, the highest mountain in Central Java. People living in this area mainly work as farmer, seller, teacher, but most of them are choose to work in big city or even abroad.

 

A group of young people living in one of the village called Literasi Kampung (Village Literacy – Eng) initiates a movement to maximize local potential trough literacy. Literacy determined as ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that allows people to communicate effectively. It is fully essential to social and human development.

 

Project:

  • Pemalang Village Library; provide a shelter for kids to read book that donated by people from all over Indonesia.
  • Mobile-Library; bring books to children living in remote area nearby camp site
  • Raising local involvement in education; open discussion, public campaign trough community visit, cultural exchange.

 

Aims:

  • To support local movement – Literasi Kampung

  • To create fun–educative (non-formal approach) activities for children,

  • To raising spirit of change local community

 

Work:

Create fun atmosphere for kids to learn in Library by storytelling, games, drawing, etc. School campaign about the importance of literacy, or other local issue. Volunteer also will help kids learn English, and world culture.

 

Special Remarks:

The weather will be little rainy and colder than in other place in Indonesia. The majority of the community are Moslem, and living in traditional yet modest way. Please be sure that you love to read a book and kids.

 

Accommodation:

 Semedo Heritage Camp 2016

Background:

Semedo is name of village that currently being laboratory for archeology and starting built up an archeology museum. The first fossil was found in 2005 by group of farmer, and they use it as ornament in their house. Day by day, there found so many fossils. In 2013, the rarest fossils: dwarf elephant (Stegodon) and giant ape, were found by The Yogyakarta Archaeology Agency. The discovery of these fossils in Semedo proves that the ancient giant ape species – around 3 meters tall (between 9 and 10 feet) - also lived in Java. The fossils that found were 700.000 BC years old (read more: Jakarta post). By this situation together with local community called Komunitas Peduli Situs Semedo (KPPS), we raising awareness of local community to taking care the fossils.

 

Project:

  • Local potential assessment; a small survey and observation on local potential

  • Eco-friendly living education; educate local people to have eco-friendly lifestyle for archaeology

  • Raising awareness of local people and kids about Semedo sites; open discussion, public campaign trough community visit, cultural exchange

 

Aims:

  • Observe local potential by visiting sites, discussion with local people. Campaign about eco-friendly living so the sites keep clean, and joining local activities

  • Educating local people and kids about fossils and archeology

 

Special Remarks:

Please read some information about fossils before the work camp start. You will work mainly in the field, be prepare with sun light. You will stay in a small traditional village, that quite religious.

Background:

Tegal Edu Camp will held in one of red-district area in Tegal, named Paleman. PKBI Tegal our sister organization were started work in this area since 2002. They have been focused on key population for HIV-AIDS transmission, sex worker, and their customer. In this area, there lived 75 families with 36 kids, and 27 teenagers that recorded, and 150 sex worker that work there but not live in this area. Kids living in this area face so many bad behaviors such as violence, exploitation, and discrimination. The objective of this project is improving quality of life of the children living in this area by raise children’s good habit in near future, and raising awareness of people living nearby, so children can be treated fairly and less discriminated. If there is more local people care about the children living in this area, we hope there will be more local volunteers that coming to help us runs the project.

 

Project:

Idramayu Youth Empowerment Project

Background:

Indramayu, located in West Java, is crossed by “Pantura” (Jalur Pantai Utara, or North Beach Stripe),one of the densest stripe in Java, especially in holiday season. Living in coastal area makes most of the population work as fishermen and farmers. Teenagers in Indramayu mostly start working and get marriage in very early aged. This condition makes concern of MCR PKBI (Mitra Citra Remaja- Youth Center of PKBI Indramayu Branch) pioneered a program for youth as an efforts to improve the quality of life of teenagers through movement called  "BE AWESOME, BE HEALTHY TEENS". MCR PKBI Indramayu consists of youth activist who believe in youth power.

 

Project:

"BE AWESOME, BE HEALTHY TEENS" is a campaign to raise the awareness of youth to take responsibilities of their self. This campaign is conducted through school road shows, fun discussions, radio talk shows, youth friendly services, and counselling.

 

Aims:

Raising awareness of teenagers to keep their self from any risky behaviour such as sexual risk, drugs, or gender based violence.

 

Work:

Volunteers will work with local volunteers to arrange creative ways to deliver information about sexual and reproductive health, gender based violence, and cultural exchange. Volunteers also will stay with local people to feel the atmosphere of fishermen’s and farmers’ ways of life and playing with the kids as well.

 

Special remarks:

Be ready with sun burnt, extremely transition weather (sunny to rainy!), and coastal air, and mosquitoes. Please keep in mind that in Indonesia talking about sexual and reproductive health issues is taboo, so you need to find creative way to deliver this kind of information. You will collaborate with volunteer of MCR PKBI Indramayu, so you must be able to work in team.

Background:

Mangkang is a fisher and farmer village located in west Semarang. This project is answering the needs of preserving the coastal side of North Java Sea in Mangkang. About 1,1 km costal line in Mangkang area is now in danger due to the abrasion of the sea, cutting mangrove by local people and heavy force from the river flows. Before, many kinds of fish and shrimps are living there, but now since the condition of the mangrove forest is getting worse, it is quite difficult to find the species anymore. Fisherman also needs to go further to the ocean to fish and it means much work they need to do to earn money. Mangkang is the project site for IIWC’s World Tanabata Action of CCIVS UNESCO and Climate4Peace of SCI International.

 

Project:

Preserving natural diversity and sea shore from the abrasion because of no more mangrove and too strong waves from the ocean will be the main focus of the camp. This project implemented by collaboration between IIWC Indonesia and local communities named BIOTA Foundation &Kelompok Petani Mangrove Lestari.

 

Aims:

To initiate the project of protecting the sea shore by planting mangroves and, to increase the awareness of the local people, the fisherman, and local students to protect their environment as well as their future.

 

Work:

Planting mangrove and other trees in beach, environment education garbage management discussion to local people and local children, some physical activity to support garbage management program in this area, school visits for environment education, green campaign in city centre, and manage the mangrove fruits to be snacks or foods and promote it. A testimony of previous volunteer from Lithuania

 

Special remarks:

Very hot and less hygiene condition of poor coastal area. Be ready with sun block and sun burnt. Bring some ideas for environment education (especially about mangrove and how to take care of it) and Olympic Games for environment education for small children aged from 6-12 and adult.

Background:

In 2012, UNAIDS reported around 35.3 million people have been infected by HIV and AIDS virus. In average, there is around 6300 new HIV cases are happening everyday and around 2.3 million cases new HIV cases are reported, about 39% come from teenagers and youths (productive ages) about 15–24 years old. Till December 2013, Indonesia Health Ministry reported 127.427 HIV infection cases found, and 52.348 AIDS cases found. The ages between 20-29 years old dominates around 24% and 15-19 years 3.3%. In Central Java province discovered 3.339 AIDS cases. It made some NGO and Youth Organization around Indonesia create actions and programs in term to educate young people about sex education in term of HIV/AIDS issues. IIWC cooperated with PILAR youth center of PKBI/IPPA Central Java creates Dance4Life Caravan project, merged with IVS movement to encourage young people around the world to care about this issue. 

 

Project:

Dance for life is from youth to youth program. The approach of Dance4life program combines the youth culture through social media, language, icon, music and especially dance. Dance4life introduces 4 unique steps which well-implemented in communities, school, and universities. The 4 unique steps concepts are described through four words, they are inspire, educate, activate, and celebrate. This event will be held as HCT (Heart Connecting Tour) to some schools, universities, and communities within two hours length of time for each event.

 

Aims:

Dance4life involves the youths by giving them personal experience, interactive and emotional. The main aims are:

  1. Youth understand basic information about sexual health and reproduction with the rights.

  2. Youth understand the issues of gender and sexuality & understand sexual issues as part of human rights.

  3. Youth understand basic information about HIV, AIDS and STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection)

  4. Youth understand about unexpected pregnancy and how to prevent it.

  5. Youth understand the problem and potential of sexual violence.

  6. Youth understand the self potential and the influence of friends and surroundings.

  7. Youth are able to share the information they got to their friends and surroundings.

  8. Youth learn some development skills to increase their self confidence.

Work:

At the beginning of the workcamp, there will be small training for volunteers on

understanding of this global campaign. Then, volunteers need to prepare and also take a role as facilitators for youth and motivate them to actively involve as agent of change in countermeasures the danger of HIV in the form of HCT (Heart Connecting Tour). Within 14 active days (minus 1 free day), volunteers will do HCT in some schools and universities with target group of 20,000 youth in each camp.

Background:

So, do remember to bring sun block, rain coat and warm clothes to prevent very hot in the day time, rain during work and very cold at night.

Background:

This project was initiated in 2006 by cooperation with NOVIB IDO which is concerned with the prevention of STI and HIV/AIDS in Tegalrejo and Sukosari, the two prostitution areas in Semarang uptown. After this pilot project, this project turns to focus more on the education especially highlighting the mental side of the children in the prostitution. This is due to the lack of concern on this issue from all stakeholders in Tegalrejo prostitution area while IIWC of PKBI found out that there is big chance for IIWC to address the children’s issue.

 

Project:

Tegalrejo project at moment is the follow up of workcamps that regularly organized between IIWC and NICE Japan by setting up a shelter. This shelter is used for children to learn their school subject and to gain soft skills such as handicraft, dance, singing, etc assisted by volunteers. This year we start to set up international group to support this project and make it better in the future.

 

Aims:

  1. To promote or introduce the shelter among the local youth or students nearby

  2. To motivate the children about the importance of education

  3. To organize activities for the children in prostitution area

  4. To exchange culture between participants, local people, and local students

 

Work:

Main work is running daily teaching activities in shelter (language classes, handicraft, arts, dance, etc), promote shelter to be recognized by local youth (youth club, high schools, or university) in order to get local volunteer that could help for daily teaching in shelter and activity with local people.

 

Special remarks:

Be ready with many ideas for games and competition for children. Be open minded, and need to have lots of love and care to children, be ready as well that some children might be hyperactive.

Borobudur Camp

Background:

Indonesia International Workcamp has been carrying on the Patrimonito project since 2008 by organizing Borobudur International Camp. The activity was organized based on the need of the awareness rising among the youth in protecting, promoting and preserving the world heritage site in Indonesia especially in Borobudur temple.

 

Project:

The international workcamp organized in Borobudur temple (find the link of UNESCO's inscription for Borobudur) for world heritage volunteer project under the scheme of UNESCO World Heritage Education program, Borobudur Patrimonito International Work camp focuses on the education and awareness campaigns by involving local senior high school students trained as “Young Guardian”, local youth and local people. The target group of the project is visitors of the temple (both domestic and international visitors).

 

Aims:

  1. To organize training for young guardian network, local students and local communities that will act as multiplier for the world heritage education project in their locality.

  2. To organize activities for creating promotional education materials or tools for public awareness campaigns on the One stop service stands.

  3. To organize public awareness campaign by distributing education and promotion materials.

  4. To strengthen the cooperation with all stake holder and site management of world heritage site in Indonesia.

 

Work:

Designing workshop/training for young guardian club of Borobudur, implementing the awareness campaigns by organizing One stop service desk for visitors of the temple and school visit.

 

Special remarks:

Be ready for many ideas for games, competitions and cultural exchange. So enthusiastic local students, very broad visitors with different understanding about preserving world heritage, be patient and have big big smiles!!!

Background:

Borobudur village heritage project is located nearby the Borobudur compound. The Borobudur compounds is the greatest Buddhist temple all over the world. Nominated as one of World Heritage List, the Borobudur compounds has the most complete Buddhist relief as well. In a year, there are approximately 3.5 million people came to see and learn Borobudur compound history and philosophy. This number are not as huge as number of people who interest in another cultural things in Borobudur village. If we walk about 10 minutes from Borobudur compounds we will find a peaceful place where Borobudur village heritage is preserved. Borobudur village heritage consists of Gamelan (Javanese traditional instrument) House, pottery houses, traditional food made of tofu, traditional oil refining, etc. There are community gallery of UNESCO to display all the traditional handmade of community.

 

Project:

Providing creative method to educate students and visitors of Borobudur compound together with local volunteer who lived in the village. Cultural exchange for the local people and the volunteer would be nice collaboration to raising awareness of preserving heritage.  

 

Aims:

Preserve Borobudur village heritage by inspiring local youth to love their village heritage.

 

Work:

Learning Borobudur village heritage, school visit to educate student about Borobudur village heritage, cleaning Borobudur temple compounds, creative campaign to raising awareness visitors to preserve Borobudur temple compounds.

 

Special remarks:

Very hot, but sometimes rainy. Be ready with sun burn and mosquitoes. Bring some ideas for creative campaign to preserve Borobudur village heritage, and your cultural learning spirit. You will amazed by the beautiful of the “sunrise and sunset” spot, fresh air from the field rice and hill, and the lovable society.

Semarang Urban Farming Camp

Background:

Semarang city is growing and becomes the 4th largest City in Indonesia. It has some slum area problem due the degree of urbanization from suburban cities surrounding this city. GAMeS (Gerakan Ayo MenanamSayur) ENG: Vegetable Planting Movement initiated a movement to optimize the usage of household waste and rising awareness toward society on environment protection in Semarang City. They face some problem to spread this spirit. For example lack of awareness on how important farming habit in urban live, and city live makes not so much time want to invest on participating the movement. But, for some couple years GAMeS engage cooperation with family empowerment program that most of the members are housewife in certain group. This group has the most possibility to join the movement.

 

Project:

Increase participation of urban communities to participate actively on farming movement to greening the city and farming in limited area.

 

Aims:

  • To increase of urban communities participation on Urban Farming Movement

  • To realize Vegetables Community which we are going to propose to city governor as one sample to be implemented to other areas.

  • To increase interest from urban communities on greening program of Semarang city and communities urban garbage management.

 

Work:

Farming activities with urban communities, vermicultur tools making in GAMeS activity center, Life-in with local communities, distributing 1000 vegetable seeds in city center during CFD (car free day/weekend), edu-farming program in some schools.

 

Special remarks:

You will participate in some local communities’ routines meeting or activities. There are living also many children surrounding your campsite, please be prepare some educative games, laugh and smiles.

Toraja Village Heritage Camp

Background:

The effort toward Toraja becomes listed in the World Heritage has been done by KRIS foundation since 2006 using the community based approach. However, inspired by the Young Guardian in Action project in Borobudur and convinced by the value of international volunteering service, KRIS Foundation is eager to host international volunteers to support its program to address the local people for world heritage awareness.

 

Project:

Toraja is a sacred cultural ethnic located in Tana Toraja or Toraja land in South Sulawesi. It is famous for burial/ funeral ceremony as huge part of the culture. Toraja is listed as one of UNESCO World Heritage tentative list. Tana Toraja sites located in remote area in Makale District. They do not have so much access on public facilities.

 

Aims:

  • To support local wisdom toward preserving tangible and intangible heritage in this sites

  • To educate local people about environmentally friendly life style

  • To develop micro economy through sustainable environment and culture

  • To create English speaking atmosphere in the community

 

Work:

Supporting the organic farming of local farmers. It will be much better if volunteers can share ideas about best practices of organic farming in different places (their home countries, etc), promoting family planning issue and youth empowerment program in this area.

 

Special Remarks:

First long and middle term volunteering project organize by IIWC involving other stakeholder of world heritage in Indonesia. Knowledge of history or world heritage site will be very helpful.

Makassar Woman Empowerment Camp

Background:

In Makassar seashore area, living fisherman families since many years ago. In this era, housewife takes an important role to develop their economic capacity in particular level to local level. Since the developments on seashore are pushing them into difficult situation that they do not have regular income per day. Kelompok Wanita Nelayan Fatimah Azzahra (English: Fisherman Housewife Community “Fatimah Azzahra”) has some empowering community program such as woman empowering to support their family daily income and to fulfil their daily needs. In the other hand, since most of them live with low income condition, therefore it causes some domestic violence. “Fatimah Azzahra” works to inform the families to avoid and to decrease this problem.

 

Project:

Volunteering program will support some activities on home industry “Fatima Azzahra”

 

Aims:

  • To support housewife empowerment program

  • To support promotion of local product

  • To promote local potential

  • To educate about environmental friendly lifestyle

 

Work:

Building simple environment facilities, organize small workshop about graphic design and packaging, marketing support, and participating local activities

 

Special remarks:

The majority of the communities are Moslems. Most of them are living in poor conditions. The project is located in the seashore are, beware of high humidity.

Background:

Denai Lama, Deli Serdang, located in the East Coast region of North Sumatra, is a place where cash crops such as rubber, cacao, palm and others grow very well. Located not far from the Kuala Namu Airport Medan, Denai Lama has three beaches with distinctive natural western Indonesia. Rainfall is sometimes high in the beginning of the year, its make the weather in Denai Lama tends fresh. Pondok Sekolah Peradabanpresent in the region as an alternative character education for children who lived in coastal area. If formal education is only focused on the development of the student’s knowledge, Pondok Sekolah Peradaban is concerned in the character building. Through art, games, as well as through a variety of creative teachers, children in Pondok Sekolah Peradaban learn in a positive and spiritual atmosphere.

 

Project:

  • Sanggar Kreativitas: a small place to display the creativities of kids such as handy craft, photo, kids drawing, etc

  • Bengkel Seni: a mini studio for kids who want to learn traditional art such as dance and music instrument

  • Parenting Education: every 2 weeks, parent of the kids will hold a meeting to improve the quality of teaching and for monitoring and evaluation

  • Peer Educator: train some kids to be educator for their peer-group

 

Aims

  • Provide a place for raise the creativity of kids

  • Raising kids dream through the boundaries

  • Cultural exchange among kids and volunteers

 

Work:

Assist the local volunteer to teach the kids, learn traditional art of North Sumatra as well as teach kids about art from your country (that could be music, clothes, etc), involve in all activities.

 

Special Remarks:

PondokSekolahPeradabanlocated 3 kms from beach, so be ready with high humidity. Sun burn is susceptible to happen, but sometimes rain comes unpredictable. You should love traditional art of north Sumatra as well as your traditional art so you can learn from the kids and teach them. Bring some ideas for performance, if you are lucky enough maybe you can join one of their performance on stage. As this school are free of charge for all students, you may bring some of educational toys or books for them.

Street Children Literacy Camp

Background: 

The famous Eastern Indonesia region has abundant natural wealth. Ternate city included as eastern Indonesia region as it located in North Maluku Province. The city surrounded by sea and consists of eight small islands and three of them are uninhabited. It is gorgeous, swathed with jungle and wild clove trees area. This magnificent tourism of Ternate is not equal to conditions of marginalized children who live in the city of Ternate. There are at least 50 kids who live in vulnerable groups without enough access to studies as well as their time to playing around. They have limited time to maximize their reading interest. Books are expensive, and the libraries are only available in school or in public place, but only open during office hours. This condition triggers some youth to raise a program named “Literasi Jalanan” (in English means Streets Literacy). Literasi Jalanan is a place for providing the books and access for the marginalized kids.

 

Project:

Perpus Jalanan Ternate (Ternate Street Library): a fenceless shanties provides varieties of books and education tools, free to be accessed to any kids; literacy on the street: a learning activity taken place in the street to any kids who want to learn something with volunteers as preceptors.

 

Aims:

  1. Provide spaces for marginalized kids who want to study while playing around on the street.

  2. Provide opportunities for children to have the spirit of learning and studying other cultures.

  3. Raising kids dream through the boundaries.

 

Work:

Assist kids to study, storytelling, and cultural exchange in 4 different locations. As Literasi Jalanan has no shelter for kids, activities will be held on the street and traditional market.

 

Special Remarks:

Due to so many activities will be held on the street so be ready for the vehicles’ emission, hot weather, sun burn, and mosquitoes. Bring so much love and hugs for kids, and smiley faces along with you. Keep in mind to stay patient while teaching the kids, be open minded with the cultural and religious thing in Ternate as well. This project has no funding, so you may bring some of books from your country or educational toys as well.

Ramadhan International Camp

Background:

Ramadhan, Moslem life and Indonesia are three things that are close related to each other. It was such an interesting suggestion from IIWC partners to organize work camp in Ramadhan Month. Luckily with good and strong partnership with IIWC local partners, in 2012 IIWC organizes the 1stRamadhan Study Camp which will emphasize an introduction of moslem culture in Indonesia: Ramadhan and its meaning for Indonesian moslem.

 

Project:

This workcamp offers a cultural experience and study about Ramadhan life in Indonesia including the ramadhan working hours, sleeping and wake up management, way of working, schedules, food and drinks, cookies, etc. More than that, volunteers will have opportunity to share their knowledge with the local students in terms of sharing Ramadhan cookies recipes and helping the students with their school studies such as English, Math, etc.

 

Aims:

To introduce moslem culture in Indonesia; to give opportunity to international volunteers an experience of the culture of Islamic celebration in Indonesia; to give opportunity for value added for the local people in practicing Ramadhan in international atmosphere; to promote global understanding and friendship through intercultural learning.

 

Work:

  • Activity 1: Learning reading and writing Arabic, calligraphy, Rebana (Islamic drum)

  • Activity 2: Cooking together for cookies or drinks or special food for lebaran or designing Moslem clothes for Lebaran

  • Activity 3: Making Ramadhan greeting cards and selling it in as charity

  • Activity 4: Helping school subject study for children

  • Activity 5: Fundraising Activity in City Center

 

Special remarks:

Be ready for very early breakfast for Ramadhan at 2.30 am, sleepy day time, praying songs during most evenings, so enthusiastic local children and local people, be patient and have big big smiles!!!

 

Feel free to bring some equipment for the students such as map of your country, if possible some second hand electronic devises that you do not mind to donate to the school for them to learn, educative toys for children of age 7-13 years old.
